Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does your fibre differ from ADSL?
A: ADSL runs over existing copper wire infrastructure which is most of the time unreliable, heavily contended and offers average speeds of around 4mbps. Our fibre, on the other hand, transmits information as light impulses along flexible glass fibres at incredible speed, allowing users to achieve speeds of up to 1000mbps and more.

Q: Do I need a voice line/number from Telkom?
A: No. Our fibre network runs completely independently of your traditional voice line.

Q: What do I need to get up and running?
A: We lay a fibre line outside the boundary walls of your home or complex. The fibre then needs to run from your boundary box to inside your home and connect it to your Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) device. We will then install a WIFI router. You choose your account and you are up and running.

Q: Are the line speeds Synchronous or Asynchronous?
A: The line speed is Synchronous.

Q: Do I need a different router/modem?
A: Yes. Only our equipment and routers work on our network.

Q: What speeds can be expected from the Wifi modem?
A: Wireless speeds are determined by a number of factors:

  • The capabilities of the wireless router used.
  • Overlapping channel interference and
  • The device(s) (such as phones, tablets and laptops) connecting to the router.

Q: Is there an extra charge for the value added services?
A: Yes. It is depending on the VAS you choose.

Q: Can I make calls over my fibre line?
A: Yes you can, using your VoIP phone MegaVoIP need to install. You will also save up to 40% on your call costs.

Q: Can I keep my existing telephone number?
A: Yes, you can port your number to MegaVoIP.

Q: What if I don’t have an existing telephone number?
A: MegaVoIP will provide you with an 087 number and we have 016 numbers.

Q: Who do I contact for a support or billing related query?
A: Megafibre. We have a Support Centre. They can be contacted telephonically on 016 932 2324 or alternatively via email support@megasurfwifi.co.za from 7am till 5pm Mon-Fri

Q: Upgrading, downgrading or cancelling?
A: You may upgrade or downgrade at any time before the 22nd depending on your account, but please note that the upgrade action may attract a small upgrade fee. Downgrades within contract term will result in a penalty payable. Cancellations on the fibre line are dependent on the contract terms agreed to with Megafibre and requires at least ( 3 ) three calendar month’s notice.

Q: Is the bandwidth shaped in any form?
A: Cap and Business Uncapped accounts NO. Home Uncapped accounts can, however, be subject to the shaping of Downloads and P2P Traffic when there is a high demand on the network.

Q: What is the contention ratio?
A: We run a contention ration of 10:1 on all Home Uncapped accounts and 1:1 on all Cap and Business Uncapped accounts.

Q: What is the speed availability on FTTH?
A: These services are provided on an “as is” and “up to” service level agreement. This means that although installations are done with high quality products and workmanship, the line speed achieved is not guaranteed. Variations may exist.
